The musical, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, is based on a book penned by Richard Morris. Meredith Willson is the talent behind the show’s music and lyrics. The plot revolves around the life of Margaret Brown, a survivor from the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The musical will soon be performed at the Stage Theatre Company that operates out of the Hopkins Center for the Arts (HCA). The original Broadway production of the show opened in 1960 at the Winter Garden Theatre. After running for five hundred and thirty two performances and one preview, the show closed in 1962. The musical was choreographed by Peter Gennaro whereas Dore Schary was the director and the brains behind the production. The original cast of the musical comprised Harve Presnell, Jack Harrold and Tammy Grimes.
Given the successful performances, Tammy won the Tony Award for “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical.” Tammy was part of the US national tour that took place in 1962. As part of the tour she performed in San Francisco as well as Los Angeles. The West End production of the show opened in 2009 with Sean Pol McGreevy and Abi Finley as lead characters.
The story opens in the 1900s where tomboy Molly is seen wrestling with her three younger brothers. She expresses her desire to learn how to read and write so that she can find a wealthy husband. Fully determined, Molly makes it to Leadville to apply for a job at the Saddle Rock saloon. While on route to Leadville, Molly meets Johnny Brown, who falls in love with her and promises to keep her happy by providing her with whatever she wants.
