The Original Nutcracker

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky is known as one of the best composers of his time who developed a reputation for his 'romantic' compositions. Even though he has given several memorable compositions but the Nutcracker, a fairy tale, remains his most popular and widely loved piece of work to date. The Nutcracker is Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's version of E T A Hoffman's popular story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The plot of the original story is much more complex, with flashbacks whereas for the purpose of this ballet, it has been simplified making it less complicated. There is a magical quality about the magnificent choreography and the theme of this ballet that it has become much more than a mere show. Especially around Christmas time and the holiday season, the show has become more of a tradition.

Nutcracker Through the Years

Even though Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky produced numerous wonderful ballets over the years but “The Nutcracker” is considered to be his absolute best two-act ballet to this date. The ballet was first presented more than a century ago but it is still around since the audience loves it so much. In Europe, especially Eastern Europe, it is one of the most loved ballets of all time. During the Christmas and holiday season, special shows are performed which, as the time goes by, are becoming even more popular with the fans. The show kept the US waiting for quite some time before making its big entry into the American ballet scene and by the 1960s the show had become immensely popular amongst people of all age groups. The popularity of the show helped it seep deep into American tradition as it became a well cherished treasure of classical music.

There are some drastic differences between the original version and the ballet story. Marie, the main character of the both the ballet and the story is nothing like the somewhat timid character which the ballet portrays her to be. As per the original story, Marie is an adventurous girl who likes to play and have fun with her toy, especially Nutcracker, the Prince. The ballet suggests that some of the adventures of Marie with the Prince were a dream whereas; it was nothing like that in story, where, at the end, Marie also ties the knot with the Nutcracker Prince. In 1927, more than thirty years after the premiere of the show, the show was staged outside Russia. Budapest's Royal Opera House was honored as the host for this first outside Russia performance. This show only presented part of the story. The complete show was not performed until seven years later.

The Universal Appeal of Nutcracker

In Europe, the show has become much more than just a ballet. During the Christmas time, it has become sort of a tradition associated with the rest of the Christmas celebrations. That is not the case in the US, however. In the US, the ballet is enjoyed mostly because of the stellar music and the awesome choreography. Whereas in Europe, the whole ballet, including the story as well, is enjoyed as a piece of art. The show was first showcased in New York in 1940 where Ballet Russee de Monte Carlo performed it. Alexandra Fedorova, when staged the show, tried to keep most of the original choreography of the show, since it was simply outstanding. In most of the other areas as well, the New York version of the show was very close to the show produced by Petipa.
