Simba:

Musafa:

Queen Sarabi:

The mother of Simba is shown as a warm, supportive, and protective mother, as well as a responsible queen who remains strong despite her grief.

Scar:

Scar is the ultimate villain, who comes across as devious and ambitious. He is obsessed with gaining power and will go to any lengths to get what he wants. The bad guy of the musical makes for a very convincing character.

Nala:

Nala is a fierce and intelligent lioness who convinces Simba to come back and claim his throne. She is Simba's childhood friend and later becomes his love interest, always standing by his side. With her logical reasoning and emotional connection, she is able to show him the right path.

Rafiki:

Rafiki is the wise old monkey and more of a mentor, always there to provide guidance but also possessing a silly and funny side.

Timon and Pumbaa:

The flamboyant Timon and the naive, loving Pumbaa offer comedic relief in the musical.

The Success Story of an Unexpected Smash Hit

Hot on the heels of the success of the 1994 Lion King movie, when the idea of a musical was floated, producer Thomas Schumacher thought it would never work. A few years down the line, he was declaring, "It's difficult not to become emotional at this realization of the show's impact." It was not a musical everyone was banking on. Even Julie Taymor, who received a Tony Award for her direction, had no idea that it would be a huge box office hit. At the time, she was not known and many doubted her, but she was given full creative freedom and the results were staggering.
