An adaptation of the book written by Alan Janes, Buddy Holly Story is a jukebox musical that is comprised of two acts. The music and lyrics of the musical have been penned by a variety of writers thereby adding variety in the whole show. The whole story revolves around the life of a rock n roll start named Buddy Holly. This show presents before the audience a very in depth and true picture of the life of this artist. Londoner Laurie Mansfield gave the idea of making a musical on the film and in order to do so he shared his thoughts with a renowned film producer Greg Smith. Paul Elliot who is also a well known producer decided to create this musical and he achieved his goal in collaboration with Paul McCartney and in the year 1989 Buddy Holly Story was premiered for the first time in West End. It was consistently performed there for twelve years and was taken on tours to different parts of the world.
The whole plot of the musical revolves around the life of Buddy Holly who is nineteen years old. He initially started singing country music. He along with his friends Jerry and Joe wanted to create a different type of music called rock and roll and formed a group called Crickets. At first they had to face many difficulties including the breaking of a contract with Decca. After facing a lot of hardships they end up signing a contract with an upcoming producer Norman Petty who respected their ideas and allowed them to experiment with music and produce something unique. This paved way for the group’s success and their songs became an instant hit including Peggy Sue and That’ll be The Day. After gaining the popularity that they wanted to the group decided to perform at the theater in Harlem. They won appreciation from all corners of the country and the critics adored their work as well. They started recording in New York City where Buddy Holly marries Maria Elena Santiago. Eventually the Crickets break and that marks his entry into the music industry as a solo singer. His appearance at the Winter Dance Party in the year 1959 created headlines that season. In the very same year Buddy Holly along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper while travelling on a small plane met a tragedy as their plane crashed due to a storm.
