Summer: The Donna Summer Musical is a journey through the electrifying universe of legendary musician and actress Donna Summer. For the first time, the world will get to know the story of how she put it all on the line to break barriers and become an inspiration for every music diva that came after her.

The production will give audiences a detailed look into Summer’s tumultuous life including the smash hit songs and volatile personal relationships. People may know her as the Bostonian girl who rose from the ranks of the gospel choir to become the ultimate dance floor queen. But no one knows how she risked everything to become the icon of an era.

The show features three distinct phases of Summer’s life: the pre-teen years in Boston (Duckling Donna), the late-teens and early 20s bringing her first taste of success (Disco Donna), and the 50s when she was at the top of her game (Diva Donna). Cast & Crew

In November, 2017, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical opened to limited engagement. The Broadway premiere followed about five months later. Directed by Des McAnuff, the play had 289 performances on Broadway before closing in December, 2018.

Other prominent members of the creative team included Paul Tazewell (costumes), Gareth Owen (sound), Howell Binkley (lighting) and Robert Brill (scenic design). The lead roles during this Broadway run were performed by Storm Lever (Duckling Donna), Ariana DeBose (Disco Donna) and LaChanze (Diva Donna).

Mackenzie Bell, Anissa Felix, Kimberley Dodson, Drew Foster and others were also involved on stage during this incredible stint on Broadway. The musical numbers that made up the show included “I Feel Love,” “Heaven Knows,” “Love to Love You Baby,” “On the Radio,” “She Works Hard for the Money,” “Stamp Your Feet” and “I Remember Yesterday” among others.

A North American tour of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical began in September, 2019 with Olivia Elease Hardy (Duckling Donna), Alex Hairston (Disco Donna) and Dan’yelle Williamson (Diva Donna) in the lead roles. Other major performers on the cast included Cameron Anika Hill, DeQuina Moore, Jay Garcia and Kyli Rae among others.

In 2018, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical earned the “Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical” and the “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical” nominations at the Tony Awards.
