How did Shen Yun came into being?

This performing arts group was started by a handful of Chinese dissidents living in the Big Apple. They were practitioners of the Chinese Falun Gong order and wanted to revive the true Chinese culture and bring it to the world. They were aggrieved that the world knew so little about the real Chinese culture and that it why they thought about reviving it. With this in mind, Shen Yun was founded in 2006.

The group is divided into four companies and consists of a total of 200 performers. For seven months a year, Shen Yun tours all over Asia, Oceania, North America and Europe. There’s no surprise that Shen Yun has not been able to perform on mainland China, but has performed regularly in Taiwan.

Large-scale group dances are the hallmark of Shen Yun. Both male and female dancers perform classical Chinese dances, making extensive use of forms and postures and acrobatic and tumbling techniques. These dances are accompanied by a Western philharmonic orchestra, which makes use of traditional Chinese and percussion instruments.
