The history of Riverdance
Influenced by Timedance, Riverdance was recorded, composed and performed for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 which was hosted by Ireland. Its music was composed by Dónal Lunny and Bill Whelan at the time which contained a rock rhythm section of electric bass and drums which was performed by the Irish folk band, Planxty.
Riverdance was first staged during the interval of Eurovision Dance Contest in 1994 at the Point Theatre in Dublin on April 30, 1994. It was a seven-minute long performance which was aired to approximately 300 million viewers across the globe and was enjoyed by 4000 people at the packed theatre who gave this piece a standing ovation. During the same year, Riverdance was performed in London at the Royal Variety Performance and was attended by Prince Charles. Since then, this piece has gone on to be staged in Dublin, New York City and Ireland.
