It is now coming to the San Diego Civic Theatre for six performances starting January 10 and the last show will take place on January 15. Rent Takes 20th Anniversary Celebrations on the Road

Winner of numerous awards including Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has been hailed as a groundbreaking masterpiece. The musical has hit the road on a national tour, celebrating its 20th anniversary. Get your hands on Rent San Diego tickets fast as the San Diego Civic Theatre will host only a limited run for six days. Here’s what you need to know about the musical.  

Jonathan Larson’s Rent is inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s hit opera La Bohemè. Set in the 90s’ Bohemian New York, the musical is based on the people living in East Village, affected by AIDS, drugs and poverty. From its very first show 20 years ago, the musical has been able to deliver its powerful message as the song “Today” states, “There is no future/There is no past/I live each moment as my last”. The chilling notion was amplified by the sudden death of its young creator Jonathan Larson, who passed away on the eve of the first preview due to an undiagnosed aortic aneurysm.

Bruce Guthrie’s version is less gritty and even though the essence of the original production is retained, Rent’s revival is fresh and flawless. Lee Proud has added depth to the musical with his dramatic choreography that helps in expressing various circumstances.

Actor Layton Williams shines with a monumental performance, stealing the show as Angel, the drag queen. Ryan O’Gorman touches hearts with his beautiful baritone; whereas, Lucie Jones commands the duet “Take Me Or Leave Me”.

Larson’s rich melodies soar in the revival and the latest production cements Rent the musical in theater history as one of the best musicals ever written.
