The first show contained acts such as The Rockettes' performance of The Living Nativity, and Parade of the Wooden Soldiers; a Toy Shop Ballet; a Jan Peerce performance; a Mighty Wurlitzer Organ solo performance and a Radio City Symphony overture with Erno Rapee.

Ever since that first show, Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular has turned into a Christmas tradition for New York City. Through the early history of the show, it continued to be choreographed and produced by Markert and Leonidoff. However, the show was produced by Peter Gennaro and others. The Hall stopped showing feature movies in the year 1979 and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular got turned into a stand alone ninety minute show instead of the usual thirty minute stage feature.
