Mummenschanz, the masquerade show, is adding its share in the expansion of the theater world since seventies. The idea of the show may sound simple and less compelling but those who have watched it, know otherwise. The boxes, plugs, cardboards, shadows, pipes and puppets perform short mute acts to convey certain messages. For the viewers, most of these acts are surprising and they are left to figure out how such ideas came across their mind. The non-verbal communication is seen at its peak in Mummenschanz and no cultural context is needed to comprehend these acts. This show is equally enjoyed by the children and grownups. With Mummenschanz Tickets you can find out more than what one can hardly explain.

The idea of the show was conceived by the Swiss artists Bernie Schurch and Andres Bossard in the late 60s. They wanted the theater world and entertainment to be free from certain traditional, cultural and class labels. Soon they were joined by the lovely Floriana Frassetto and their imaginative and philosophical work was just ready to be presented to the public. Mummenschanz was premiered in Avignon Festival in 1972 and it turned out to be quite a success. The 3 artists decided to take their idea to other parts of the world and gave countless performances in America, Eastern and Western Europe, Africa, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Asia and Middle East. Mummenschanz was performed on the Broadway for 3 successful years and it received encouraging reviews from the famous newspapers.

In 1976, Mummenschanz crew appeared as guest stars in The Muppet Show and performed their acts. The American science educational television show 3-2-1 Contact also featured them in an episode. In the 90s, the famous Northern Exposure included some acts from the Mummenschanz in their episode. And perhaps the biggest exposure offered to the show was their performance in the prestigious international television festival Rose d’Or. After the death of Bossard in 1992, Frassetto and Schurch felt the need of preserving and promoting the non-verbal entertainment industry. They formed Mummenschanz Foundation to help the non-verbal theater. Lately, few other artists have joined the company, these names include: Raffaella Mattioli, Pietro Montandon and Jan Maria Lukas.

Team Mummenschanz uses everyday simple objects and turn them into extraordinary acts. The abstract and philosophical theme of the show has a huge margin of perception; same act can mean different to different people. The costumes of the performers are simple, either plain black or white, but their masks are carefully designed and of course expensive. It is the mask that shifts its shape and appears communicating silently with the audiences. These imaginative acts focus on human relationships and hence, despite having no cultural reference, interest the audiences. New acts are added in the show regularly and the old ones are given the platinum status of being the exclusive material.

Mummenschanz is enthralling the theater audience from the last four decades and it doesn’t seem to have run out of innovative ideas. This non-traditional revolutionary theater production has inspired many other shows but it kept its own unique charm of being the original and alive piece of entertainment. The creative team of Mummenschanz introduced many characters and has invented tricks to make these characters do wonderful things apparently on their own. These characters are satire on certain typical human conditions which we might have found pretty normal before. Mummenschanz consists of many short acts and each of these acts is ironic and has moral to it. So the show is just not entertainment but more of a social service done in a very light and casual manner.

Almost all critics and reviewers have given high scores to this show and they strongly recommend that everyone, especially teenage kids must watch. There is no age limit for the show, children of all age can enjoy, if not understand it.  The fact remains that Mummenschanz acts can be decoded more easily by the grown up. Grab Mummenschanz Tickets now and let your entire family learn how words can sometime be useless effectively expressing certain emotions.
