Who is Iron Mike?
While you can find out the details from him, here is a refresher. Michael Gerard Tyson was born in Brooklyn, New York and was raised by his mother. He never knew his biological father nor his step-father. Tyson had a troubled youth. By the time he celebrated his thirteenth birthday, he had been arrested several times. Long before he was fighting in the ring, he was fighting with other kids in the streets of New York. Tyson says his mother was disappointed in him. You can expect him to open up about this part of his life during Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth – Round 2.
The boxer in him was discovered by Bobby Stewart, a juvenile detention center counselor and former boxer who would later become Tyson’s first trainer. It was Stewart who introduced Tyson to Cus D’Amato, a boxing trainer and manager who would later manage Tyson’s career. When he was sixteen, Tyson’s mother died and Cus D’Amato became Tyson’s legal guardian.
Amateur Career & Rise to Stardom
As an amateur boxer, Tyson won gold medals at the 1981 and 1982 Junior Olympic games. He fought Henry Tillman twice on amateur level and lost both times by decision.
Tyson went professional as an 18-year-old and defeated Hector Mercedes in a first round KO. As he kept defeating and decimating his opponents’ careers, media soon focused on him, dubbing him the next great heavyweight champion.
Tyson made his professional debut in 1985, the year Cus D’Amato died. And though his career only went upwards after 1985, some say his personal troubles started at the same time. He may choose to talk about it during Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth – Round 2.
Boxing Style
No one popularized Peek-a-boo boxing style more than Iron Mike. Developed by his mentor, trainer, manager and guardian, Cus D’Amato, Peek-a-boo boxing style involves placing of hands in front of the face to provide maximum protection to the face. It makes it easier for the boxer to jab the opponent’s face. Boxers other than Tyson who’ve used this style of boxing in their career are Floyd Patterson, Jose Torres and Kevin Rooney.
