Jesus Christ Superstar is a musical written by Tim Rice and later brought to the professional stage by producer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Before being staged on Broadway in 1971, it was a rock opera based on a US album. The work is based on the Gospel's account of Jesus Christ's last week of life. It depicts the psychology of Jesus and other characters. The main characters are Jesus and Judas. Judas is described as a tragic character who struggles to choose between right and wrong and the endless troubles and struggles of Jesus himself.

Jesus Christ Superstar consists of two Acts, beginning with Judas criticizing Jesus Christ and his followers. He blames Jesus for making his followers believe in false stories, although he still loves him. Judas believes Jesus is just another man and not a God, and tries to prevent him and his followers from going to Jerusalem, but no one listens. Jesus is troubled that his followers do not understand him and his message, and Mary Magdalene, seeing him worried, tries to console him. Judas sees this as wrong, believing Jesus is going against his own teachings by getting involved with a prostitute; however, Jesus comments that if he isn't indulging in any kind of sin, there's nothing wrong with it. When Jesus arrives at the Temple in Jerusalem, he finds out it is used for evil purposes; he gets angry and tells all the merchants to leave. Angry and tired, overwhelmed by his heavy burdens, Jesus tries to wander away, but is faced by crippled, hopeless, and troubled people. He tries to heal them all, but being unable to solve all of their troubles, he gets frustrated and tells them to heal themselves. Mary Magdalene, finding Jesus upset, tells him to relax. While Jesus is asleep, Mary confesses her love for him, explaining how different he is from any other man. Meanwhile, Judas conspires against Jesus and gathers some priests to help him, disclosing Jesus' location.

The second Act starts with the famous incident from the Gospel titled "The Last Supper," where Jesus' famous speech is narrated. He mentions how one of his apostles will betray him and Pilate will deny him three times. Judas arrives with Roman soldiers and gets Jesus arrested. Pilate hands Jesus over to King Herod, who sends him back to Pilate, thinking Jesus is just another messiah. Judas, ashamed of Jesus' harsh treatment, repents and commits suicide. The play ends with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, during which he sees Judas' spirit who asks him why he chose to come the way he has. The Act 2 closes as Jesus is put on the cross.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a portrayal of intense mental and psychological suffering and struggle of different people, mainly Jesus Christ and Judas. Although it faced controversy from some religious groups, it earned great success and sold 720 performances. Later, it was made into a motion picture. The musical is known for its strong and deep performances and songs such as "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Heaven on Their Minds." It leaves a lasting effect on the audience's mind. It is in its own unique way, strong yet tender, holy yet profane. Being based on the Gospel, it is sacred in its entirety. Throughout its performances, it has gone through changes to meet the demands of each era. It is now known to have adopted a modern "touch" to its story and costumes, the secret of its success in each generation.

Jesus Christ Superstar has something for everyone: it is a historical treat for those who enjoy history, a tale from the Gospel for the religious, a musical feast for music lovers, and a complete tale of love and struggle for anyone who enjoys a good play.
