Hairspray is set in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962, when racial segregation was still practiced in the area. The protagonist, Tracy Turnblad, is a short, plump, teenage girl whose greatest asset is her pluck. She causes a tectonic shift in the racial dynamics of Baltimore through her love of music and dancing, her indestructible self-esteem, and her optimism. Tracy avidly pursues stardom as a dancer on the Corny Collins Show, a local TV show wildly popular with youngsters. When she wins a role on the show, Tracy becomes an instant celebrity and begins a campaign to integrate the show, leading a local movement against racial segregation.

The latest film version was released in 2007, starring John Travolta, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, and Michelle Pfieffer. Hairspray broke the record for biggest sales at the premiere weekend for a movie musical, becoming the fourth highest grossing musical film in US cinema history.
