Set in Tsarist Russia, 1905, the musical is based on the famous character Tevye and the tale "Tevye and his Daughters" by Sholem Aleichem. Jospeh Stein wrote the book with the music by Jerry Bock. The story focuses on Tevye, who has five daughters, and how he struggles to keep the Jewish religious customs intact in the family while various circumstances influence the norms. He tries to deal with his daughters’ decisions that challenge his beliefs and religious tradition of the society.
