Fiddler on the Roof: The Title & Story
The Fiddler is a metaphor for survival in a life full of uncertainty, which is precisely the life story of Tevye, the protagonist. Tevye is a deeply religious Jew who has five daughters. Tevye wants to maintain his Jewish identity in Tsarist Russia. His life is a struggle since his daughters do not necessarily share his worldview and the government is anti-Jewish.
Sholem Aleichem, a Ukrainian Jew, wrote a series of stories under titleTevye and his Daughters. Aleichem’s magnum opus was written in Yiddish between 1894 and 1914, a period during which Tsarist Russia itself was going through social upheaval. A country itself in search of its new destiny and identity was perhaps something which pushed Aleichem to pen down the character of Tevye, desperately fighting to hold onto something he considers precious while knowing all along that he is bound to lose it.
How Different Is the Musical from Aleichem’s Original Work?
The biggest difference between Aleichem’s original work and its stage adaptation is that the latter has a happy ending. Aleichem’s series of stories ended with the protagonist alone and his daughters gone. While in the musical, they are all together and moving to the US.
The musical may not be entirely authentic but it strikes all the right chords with the audience. So get your Fiddler on the Roof Chicago tickets today.
