Escape to Margaritaville Tickets

Escape to Margaritaville is a musical filled with humor and Jimmy Buffet’s classic feel-good songs such as ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise,’ ‘Come Monday’ and ‘Volcano.’ As the title suggests the play is blissful escape from the boring routine of everyday lives. Following a number of previews at the La Jolla Playhouse in May, it officially opened at the California venue on May 28. It will run at the theatre until July 9 following which it will be staged at the Saenger Theatre, The Hobby Center and the Oriental Theatre in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago respectively.

Plot

The plot of the musical is very much representative of the relaxed beach side feel that is evident in Buffet’s music. It tells the story of a lively island resort. Tully played by Paul Alexander Nolan is a bartender who makes his living by playing for the patrons for the resort. His life is centered on new guests who come at the resort for vacations. He thinks he is pretty much set in his life until he meets Rachel. When the workaholic environmental scientist Rachel played by Alison Luff visits the island to attend the bachelorette part of a friend, she meets Nolan and their romance blossoms in the tropical paradise.

Humor

Filled with humor, the musical keeps a smile on the faces of the audience throughout. There is a sense of connection between those on stage and those sitting before it. The play not only engages the audience but also makes them interact. For example one of the characters might just call anyone from the audience to sing some of the lines of Buffet’s songs.

The Sets

Keeping the feel of a summer beach-side vacation in view, the sets of the musical have mostly been kept simple. However certain aspects such as the lush vegetation on top of a volcano are strikingly beautiful.

About the Cast

Alisan Luff plays the character of Rachel. She was last seen as Fantine in the Broadway revival of Les Misérables. She has also played central roles such as Miss Honey in Matilda and Elphaba in Wicked.

Paul Alexander Nolan who is seen as Tully in Escape to Margaritaville is himself is well-established actor. He earned a nomination at the Drama Desk Awards 2016 for his performance in Bright Star on Broadway at the Cort Theatre. Other roles he has played include Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady and Billy Flynn in Chicago.

The two actors are now performing together in Escape to Margaritaville and from the previews and the reviews of the musical so far, their chemistry is phenomenal to say the least.

About the Director

Escape to Margaritaville is directed by Christopher Ashley who is currently the Tony Award nominee in the category of Best Director of a Musical for the show ‘Come From Away .’ The play also ran at the La Jolla prior to its Broadway premiere. 

Ashley has previously been nominated for a Tony Award in the same category first for The Rocky Horror Show in 2001 and then for Memphis in the year 2010.

Music Scores

The highlight of the musical is of course the music and lyrics by the iconic music artist Jimmy Buffet. Some of the songs have been written specifically for this musical while others are his fans’ old favorites such as ‘Margaritaville,’ ‘Volcano,’ ‘Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit,’ ‘My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink and I Don’t Love Jesus.’
