Come From Away: Plot and Outline

Come From Away is set in the week immediately after the September 11 attacks that resulted in many planes making unexpected landings at different locations around Canada as part of “Operation Yellow Ribbon.” 38 of them were ordered to touch down in Gander, a small town in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Many of the characters in the production are based on actual residents of the area who provided emergency shelter to the nearly 7,000 stranded travellers. Come From Away is a fantastic tale that pays tribute to the human capacity for compassion and love in the face of blinding hate. The musical was first presented in 2013 and enjoyed record-breaking runs at many theaters around North America. These included the Seattle Repertory Theatre, San Diego’s La Jolla Playhouse and the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto. It made its Broadway debut in early 2017 and picked up 7 nominations at the 71stTony Awards.

Come From Away ultimately took home the big prize for “Best Direction in a Musical.” It also enjoyed multiple wins at the Drama Desk Awards and the Outer Critics Circle Awards while also earning a Grammy nomination. Moreover, the off-Broadway production of the show was nominated 14 times at the Helen Hayes Awards, going on to win in 4 of those categories.
