A Work of Genius

Come From Away is a work of art, and anyone who has seen this breathtakingly awesome musical would agree. It is the brainchild of the husband-wife duo of Irene Sankoff and David Hein, who not only composed the score of the musical, but also wrote the lyrics and authored the book. This musical is based on true events; it is set in the weeks following the September 11 attacks and tells the story of when 38 planes were ordered to land in the small town of Gander, located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Initially, nerves ran high and cultures clashed, but eventually the situation got under control, leading to the formation of many enduring friendships.

The Broadway Production

Although Come From Away debuted in 2013, it wasn't until 2017 that the musical made its Broadway premiere. It was staged at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 12th and turned out to be a massive hit both critically and at the box office. In October 2018, the show became the longest-running Canadian musical in the history of Broadway, surpassing The Drowsy Chaperone, which ran for 674 performances. This production of the show won three Drama Desk Awards, including one for 'Outstanding Musical.'
