Varekai is amongst the top rated touring productions from Cirque Du Soleil. The show first premiered in spring 2002 at Montreal. It is written and directed by Dominic Champagne. His shelf is adorned by awards such as the Prix de la Critique, Masque du Public and two Gémeau Awards. Andrew Watson is the director of the production, and his extensive work for Cirque Du Soleil has been showcased in others shows like Zumanity. The set for Varekai is designed by Stephane Roy who has previously worked on the sets for Dralion, KOOZA, Kurios and Zarkana among other Cirque Du Soleil shows. The exquisite costumes for the show are detailed by the renowned costume designer Eiko Ishioka. Her acclaimed work includes costume designs for movies such as Mirror Mirror and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and for the opening ceremony of 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
The show celebrates the Greek mythical story of Icarus. He and his father Daedalus attempt an escape from the island of Crete. Daedalus being a master craftsman fashions wings made out of feather and wax for himself and his son. He warns his son to neither fly too high nor too low as the heat of the sun would melt the wax and the dampness of the sea would clog the feathers. Icarus ignores his father and ventures high into the sky where his wings melt resulting in his fall.
The show continues the story of Icarus as he falls into the magical realm of Varekai. The kaleidoscopic land sits at the summit of a volcano within a deep forest which is inhabited by fabulous creatures. Icarus sets off on a journey of adventure through Varekai where he meets the sensual Betrothed, the wise Guide and the ingenious mad scientist Skywatcher.
Varekai is an amazing composition created by skilled acrobats, performers, dancers and clowns. It contains around twenty acts ranging from aerial straps to aerial hoops, from Russian swings to Georgian dances and from hand-balancing on canes to juggling. One of the prominent acts is the Icarian Games, which constitutes the ancient circus discipline that is rarely seen in modern contemporary circus. It involves members of the same family that perform human juggling while being catapults and catchers themselves.
The flight of Icarus is also one of the most amazing acts from the show. It features the lead performing contortions as he dives in a net that catapults him high up on the stage. Slippery Surface involves artists catching and flinging one another on a specially designed surface to create an illusion of skating. An artist performing on canes teeters in a dance like a jointed puppet to perform the act Solo on Crutches.
Cirque Du Soleil is taking Varekai on its ‘North American Tour – Arena Version’. The iconic blue and yellow big top circus will make stops at some of the major cities in Canada and the US. These include Detroit, Kansas City, Brooklyn, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Toronto and Montreal. The arena version will be hosted in venues such as the Hampton Coliseum, the Smoothie King Center, the Denny Sanford Premier Center, the Valley View Casino Center and the likes.
