The premiere
Also known as the fourth longest running show in the history of Broadway, Cats is the masterpiece of Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is based on T.S. Eliot’s book, ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’ which hit the shelves in 1939. The musical made its debut at the New London Theatre over three decades ago on May 11, 1981 and was directed and choreographed by Trevor Nunn and Gillian Lynne respectively. It became a huge success and garnered a couple of Laurence Olivier Awards.
The following year, Cats premiered on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater and after 7,485 performances, the musical closed on September 10, 2000. The original Broadway production of the show won seven Tony Awards including three for, ‘Best Musical,’ ‘Best Book of a Musical’ and ‘Best Original Score.’ Since then, the show has gone on to be staged in different cities across the world including, Budapest, Sydney and Brisbane.
