Bullets Over Broadway is a hilarious musical comedy, an adaptation of the movie of the same name, brought about by Susan Stroman and Woody Allen. It follows the story of a playwright looking for someone to back his newest show and a gangster looking for a way to make his showgirl girlfriend happy. Their paths collide and so begins a story, a musical comedy and what could possibly be the start of a very entertaining show. Set to premiere at the St James Theatre, Bullets Over Broadway is a musical filled with comic routines, colorful characters and songs from the twenties. Woody Allen is an American screenwriter and director, as well as playwright, actor and comedian known for many popular movies. Originally hailing from The Bronx, he has been active since 1950 and is a living legend today in the American entertainment industry. He is the recipient of many awards and honors, winning four Academy Awards from a mind blowing twenty three Academy Award nominations. He has also won nine BAFTA Awards from twenty two nominations and two Golden Globe Awards from thirteen nominations.
Woody Allen, author of the Bullets Over Broadway book, has a career spanning over half a century. He began working as a comedy writer, writing for TV, as well as publishing short stories. During the sixties, he began as a standup comedian, who is ranked today fourth on the 100 Greatest Standup Comics of all time list by Comedy Central. In the UK, he is ranked as the third greatest comedian of all time. During the late sixties and seventies, he was at the front of the wave of New Hollywood filmmakers, known for movies such as Annie Hall, Hannah and Her Sisters, Manhattan and Midnight in Paris. Today, he is known for well over forty movies, with many dubbing him a ‘treasure of the cinema’.
Woody Allen also directed the original movie upon which the musical is based, as well as wrote it with Douglas McGrath. The movie was released in 1994. It received seven Academy Award nominations and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Jennifer Tilly. Together with director Susan Stroman and producers Letty Aronson and Julian Schlossberg, he adapted the musical, which is set to premiere on Broadway, at the famous St. James Theatre.
Susan Stroman, director of this fabulous musical comedy, is a director and choreographer with five Tony Awards to her name, as well as several Olivier, Outer Critics, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards. She has also won five Astaire Awards and her most recent musical was The Scottsboro Boys, which received many Tony Award nominations for her choreography and direction. She was also the director and choreographer of The Producers, a musical that won a record twelve Tony Awards, including those for Best Choreography and best Direction. She has also worked on other Broadway productions such as the Tony Award winning musical Contact, Crazy for You, Oklahoma!, Show Boat, Big, Steel Pier and Young Frankenstein amongst others.
She has also choreographed operas and ballets, as well as productions for TV such as HBO’s Liza and PBS’s Sonheim. She is the recipient of the highly coveted American Choreography Award for her work on the movie Center Stage, four Golden Globe nominations and the George Abbott Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatre.
The cast includes Brooks Ashmanskas, who plays the role of Warner Purcell and is known for roles in Promises, Promises and Zach Braff, who plays the role of David Shayne in what will be his first appearance on Broadway. Vincent Pastore plays Nick Valenti, Betsy Wolfe plays Ellen and Lenny Wolpe plays Julian Marx. Together, this musical is worth seeing live with family and friends.
