Ballet Arizona is now celebrating its thirty-third season, and twenty-seventh performance of the Ballet Arizona The Nutcracker show, which is choreographed by nationally recognized Artistic Director Ib Andersen. The Nutcracker is among the ballet company's most successful shows, which has also been central to the holiday season calendar that has traditionally always featured the moving story. This beloved ballet centers on a little girl who receives a nutcracker magical doll as a Christmas present. She comes across the scary King Rat before beginning her fascinating journey into the Kingdom of Sweet and the sparkling Land of Snow. Audience of all ages experience the awe of special effect such as the story's Christmas Tree that appears to 'grow' up to forty feet high, as two hundred pounds of pretend snow falls in the snow scene. In addition, the production features twenty-five different backdrops, each of which is more marvelous than the previous. It is no wonder why Ballet Arizona The Nutcracker tickets are among the most sought after treats around holiday season each year.
Ballet Arizona, which is soon to perform the Ballet Arizona The Nutcracker show, was formed in 1986 from a merger of three Arizona-based dance companies that were only just barely surviving. The companies were brought together by Phoenix art supporter and philanthropist Allen Rosenberg, who suggested that Ballet West Arizona, Phoenix Ballet and Arizona Dance Theater be combined. The company was initially under the directorship of Jean-Paul Comelin who had earlier worked with Stuttgart Ballet and Milwaukee Ballet, as well as by New Zealand's famous dancer, Malcolm Burn. The latter left the company soon so that it was run by Comelin alone till 1992, which is when Micheal Uthoff was appointed as the artistic director. Through the nineties, the company kept growing until it was confronted with financial issues in 1999. By the following year, it was at the verge of being shut down owing to severe debts, but was saved in its final moments through a successful funding campaign. In May 2000, Ib Anderson became the new artistic director, and has retained the position since. He has not only given the company a new shape but has also extended their repertory, while adding several George Balanchine pieces alongside his own choreography. By 2004, Keien Myers was made the new Management Consultant of the administrative division, a year after which the company's debt was eliminated.
Ballet Arizona offers a broad variety of works by some of the most renowned choreographers including Twyla Tharp, Balanchine, and Christopher Wheeldon. Anderson, the current Artistic Director, is known to choreograph his own material for the company, while also reinterpreting several classical ballets such as the upcoming Ballet Arizona The Nutcracker performance, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and Coppelia. In 2008, the company introduced Anderson's new edition of the loved Midsummer Night's Dream. The company has been performing regularly at Orpheum Theatre and Phoenix Symphony Hall, where a segment called ‘Pre-performance Chats’ is offered just before the performances with the exception of The Nutcracker. Every performing season is begun with an equally intriguing series of outdoor, free presentations called Ballet Under the Stars. Moreover, a volunteer organization called Esprit de Corps renders many services such as hosting their yearly Nutcracker Party.
This season's Ballet Arizona The Nutcracker show includes two-hundred and sixty costumes, which as reported required over sixty-five hundred yards of cloth. Among interesting facts published about the show is one regarding the number of Austrian Swarovski crystals that made the Snow Scene sparkle -- more than a hundred thousand.
