Anastasia: The Mesmerizing Musical

Anastasia is the creative result of the efforts of Academy Award-nominated composer Stephen Flaherty, Golden Globe-nominated lyricist Lynn Ahrens, and four-time Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally. The show is based on the 1997 American animated musical historical fantasy film of the same name, directed and produced by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The reading of Anastasia was held in 2012, featuring Kelli Barrett as Anya, Patrick Page as Vladimir, Angela Lansbury as Empress Maria, and Aaron Tveit as Dmitry. Three years later, the musical's workshop took place in New York, starring Elena Shaddow as Anya, Douglas Sills as Vlad, and Ramin Karimloo as Gleb Vaganov. The following year, the show made its debut at the Hartford Stage in Hartford, choreographed by Peggy Hickey and directed by Tony Award-winner Darko Tresnjak, with Derek Klena and Christy Altomare as Dmitry and Anya, respectively. The musical was a hit, winning six Connecticut Critics Circle Awards.

Other Productions

On March 23, 2017, Anastasia premiered on Broadway at the Broadhurst Theatre. This production of the show ended on March 31, 2019, having completed 808 performances. It also garnered nominations for eight Drama Desk Awards, including two for 'Outstanding Musical' and 'Outstanding Book of a Musical.'

Since then, the show has been staged in Madrid, The Hague, Mexico City, Stuttgart, and Japan, and it toured North America in 2018.
