On the Streets of Detroit and Discovered by Berry Gordy – The Temptations & Their Story

The Temptations were formed in 1960 as The Elgins. The original lineup consisted of Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, Melvin Franklin, Elbridge “Al” Bryant and Otis Williams (who is still with the band). Interestingly, these musicians came from two rival bands. Despite being rivals they knew each other well since they were participating in the same talent shows and performing at the same public venues. They came together and formed The Elgins after their own bands disbanded.

The Elgins auditioned for Motown. Berry Gordy was impressed and offered them a record deal. However, he found out that the name The Elgins was being used by another band and therefore The Elgins were renamed The Temptations.

Music

The Temptations first hit single under Motown was released in 1962. Titled “(You’re My) Dream Come True,” it peaked at No.22 on the R&B chart. The band however remained unlucky with its studio albums in the beginning till The Temptations Sing Smokey, their second studio album that was released in 1965. The album peaked at No.1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No.35 on the Billboard 200. The Temptations Sing Smokey spawned the band’s earliest hits such as “My Girl,” “It’s Growing” and “The Way You Do the Things You Do.”

The Temptations have released a total of 43 studio albums, 109 singles, 15 compilation and 4 live albums. Their most popular numbers are, “My Girl,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “(I Know) I’m Losing You,” “I Wish It Would Rain,” “You’re My Everything,” “Cloud Nine,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “Since I Lost My Baby” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me).”

Legacy

In 2017, the Billboard Magazine called them “the greatest R&B group of all time.” The Temptations not only pioneered psychedelic soul, but were also instrumental in the evolution of soul and R&B music. Known for their flashy wardrobe, distinct harmonies and choreography, The Temptations are one of the most successful musical acts in music history.

Awards & Accolades

The band has won three Grammy Awards. They were the first Motown recording act to win a Grammy Award. In 2013, the band was awarded with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Six members of the band have also been inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll include three singles from The Temptations, namely “My Girl,” “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me).”The Rolling Stone magazine lists them at No.68 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of all time.

68. The Temptations

In the Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Artists” list, the snippet on The Temptations is penned down by Rod Stewart. He says that he wears loud colors because of The Temptations. “I blame them for teaching me to wear loud colors.” Further, Stewart says that nobody moved like the Tempts. Not only he but his children also grew up listening to The Temptations. And despite being a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee with a Grammy Award, Stewart never felt comfortable singing with The Temptations. “They would always pick me out of the audience with a spotlight, trying to get me up to the stage. But I never did. I'm too frightened.”
