About
Houston Dynamo
The incarnation of
Houston Dynamo can be traced all the way back to the days of the
San Jose Earthquakes. The Earthquakes were owned and operated by the Anschutz Entertainment Group (also called AEG) and by the end of the 2005, they had decided to stop playing in San Jose and move to Houston to construct a soccer stadium. The coach of the Earthquakes,
Dominic Kinnear and some others players re-located too. A major problem cropped up when the MLS refused to transfer all the records of the franchise to the one being formed in Houston so AEG decided to form an entirely new team. December 15
th, 2005 was the day when
Houston finally got their much awaited soccer team. The franchise was named the
Houston 1836 initially but soon it was renamed
Houston Dynamo.
The debut season for the
Houston Dynamo was more successful than anyone anticipated. With Dominic taking over the coaching duties the franchise kicked off the 2006 season by winning the
Carolina Challenge Cup. They played their first game in the league on 2
nd April, 2006, that too at their home field the
Robertson Stadium and deafeated the Rapids with 5-2. By the end of the season the team had reached the conference playoffs to play
Chivas USA. Rapids were downed in the conference final and the
Houston Dynamo made their way to the
MLS Cup where they beat the
New England Revolution to win the league in the debut season. They kicked off the next season a little slowly than the previous one but soon found their feet and started climbing up the league standings owing much to a sensational run of eleven unbeaten games. They made their way to the MLS final again to once again beat the
New England Revolution by 2-1.
Two titles in two years was an unbelievable level of success that warmed the hearts of fans that finally had a team to be proud of. Boxing champion
Oscar de la Hoya and the
Brener International Group then became partial owners of the
Houston Dynamo by buying fifty percent shares (25% each) with AEG owning the remaining fifty percent. The fans can expect bigger and better things from their team especially when their brand new
