About Vanderbilt Commodores

The Vanderbilt Commodores’ fourteen teams play in the Southeastern Conference, whereas the lacrosse team plays in the American Lacrosse Conference. Six of the college's teams play men's sports whereas ten play women's sports. The baseball team has been playing the sport since 1886. By 1921, the program had become quite successful and had won the Southern Conference. Under the leadership of manager Bill Schwartz, the team rose to national prominence and became even more successful under Larry Schmittou. He led the team to back–to–back conference championships and won the Coach of the Year Award.

Twenty players during Schmittou's era became All–SEC players and fourteen went on to be drafted in the MLB. The current manager of the team, Tim Corbin, has led the team to greater prominence, with nationally renowned players such as David Price, Jensen Lewis and Jeremy Sowers. In 2004, the team qualified for the NCAA Super Regionals and are regularly ranked number one in the conference. The team has similarly been honored by Baseball America as having the nation's top recruiting class.

The Vanderbilt Commodores men's basketball team also began playing before the advent of the twentieth century and has spawned several All–Americans. The team has appeared nine times at the NCAA National Tournament, of which one is an Elite Eight appearance and four are Sweet Sixteen appearances. The team has an amazing 650–184 record at home and has won the NIT championship once. Their women's basketball team has played in twenty NCAA National Tournaments, the third largest number in the conference. Their basketball teams are consistently ranked at the top of the nation.

The women's basketball team has twelve Sweet Sixteen appearances and has made it to the Final Four once. The team has been ranked number one in the US according to a poll and their current coach, Melanie Balcomb, has led the team to the NCAA Tournament regularly. Many Vanderbilt footballers have gone on to play in the NFL, including Jayy Cutler who now plays for the Denver Broncos. He set many records while at Vanderbilt and started forty consecutive games. The Commodores football team has also fielded coaches that have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, including Dan McGugin and Ray Morrison.

Vanderbilt also hosts several non-varsity teams, including a club baseball team and a rugby team. The rugby team has fierce rivalries with Ole Miss and the Tennessee Volunteers.
