Thundering Across Court
The Oklahoma City Thunder came into being in 1967 as the Seattle SuperSonics who joined the NBA as an expansion franchise that year. Making their NBA debut in the 1967-68 season, the SuperSonics became a very competitive outfit over the next decade or so which culminated with their maiden NBA title triumph in 1979.
The beginning was slow with a few losing seasons but the Sonics kept making progress, posting their first winning record in the 1971-72 campaign. Only a poor run late in the regular season after injuries to a number of starters prevented the Sonics from making the playoffs that year. However, the franchise’s fortunes would soon change.
With the arrival of the legendary Bill Russell as head coach in 1973, the SuperSonics became a much more competitive outfit that could give the big boys in the league a run for their money. Russell guided the Sonics to their first playoff appearance in 1975 and though he wasn’t in-charge when the team won the NBA crown in 1979, the foundations for this success had been laid.
After ending as runners-up in 1978, the Sonics claimed their first NBA Championship the following year. Other titles during this period included back-to-back Conference Championship wins in 1978 and 1979 as well as a Division crown in 1979.
In 2006, the Sonics franchise was sold by then owner Howard Shultz (former Starbucks CEO) to a group of businessmen from Oklahoma City and the team relocated there in 2008 after taking the name Oklahoma City Thunder. Catch them in action by getting Thunder Playoff tickets.
The Thunder play their home games at the Chesapeake Energy Arena and have had a number of top players in their ranks over the years. These include the likes of Kevin Durant, James Harden and Russell Westbrook among others. At the turn of the decade, the Thunder assembled a bright young team that recorded impressive wins against some of the NBA’s elite sides.

Since the turn of the decade, they have been the most dominant team in their division with 5 titles from 2011 to 2016. A Conference triumph in 2012, their 4th overall and the first since moving to OKC, is also a part of this period of success. In total, the SuperSonics/Thunder have won the Division title 11 times while they have been Conference Champions on 4 occasions.
The Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Rockets have frequently been on the wrong side of a playoff result against the Thunder. They boast a postseason win percentage of over 60 against both outfits.
