Get to know the Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays were incepted in 1998. The foundation of this team was laid in 1960s when former civic leader and St. Petersburg Times publisher, Jack Lake suggested that St. Petersburg should have its own Major League baseball team. In the 1980s and 1990s, many local businessmen tried to acquire a baseball team but all in vain. In 1990, The Florida Suncoast Dome was constructed in St. Petersburg to lure a new baseball team but the city had some competition as two groups, one in Tampa and the other in Sarasota were seeking for an expansion team that same year.

In 1992, the owner of the San Francisco Giants, Bob Lurie decided to sell his team to a group of investors based out of Tampa Bay. The group was led by Vince Naimoli. However, MLB owners stopped this move under pressure from San Francisco officials and the Giants were sold to a group who kept them in the city.

On March 9, 1995, a new expansion franchise was finally awarded to Naimoli’s Tampa Bay group and three years later, the Tampa Bay Rays played their first season.

The Tampa Bay Rays begin to play

The Tampa Bay Rays struggled to make it past the regular season in the first ten years. However, in 2008, they surprised everyone when they not only qualified for the playoffs but went on to defeat the White Sox and the Red Sox in the ALDS and the ALCS respectively. But that’s as far they went as they were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series game, 4-1.

The Rays really began to hit their stride for the first time in the second half of the 2000s. They went on to win the East Division title in 2008 and then put the icing on the cake by clinching the AL Pennant the same year. Two years, later they won their second division crown.
