Fans of bull riding can anticipate lots of exciting and nerve-wracking competition by getting their hands on some PBR Global Cup tickets. The de-facto World Cup of bull riding is just around the corner and it gets underway in late winter at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The retractable roof stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, will be the center of attention as Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and the United States battle against each other in their bid to become the “Toughest Nation on Dirt.” The annual event sees the best bull riders from one team going up against the best bull riders from another team. A different country hosts the event every year.
Tournament History
The PBR Global Cup was set up in 2017 by the organization of Professional Bull Riders (PBR) with the intention of having a global tournament for the sport which will crown the best team in the world. This was preceded by the PBR World Cup which was held from 2007 to 2010. However, this PBR Global Cup runs on a somewhat different format and is not a continuation of that event.
One of the five competing nations hosts the annual team event each year. Certain competitive advantages are also afforded to the host nation. The contest continues and the riders keep going up against one another until one team gets hold of all five parts of the Global Cup. These include the horn as well as the native soil of the competing nations. So, to lift the cup, one team has to hold the horn and the native soil of the other four nations in order to be crowned winners and become known as the toughest nation on dirt.
Competition Format
Similar to the FIFA Soccer World Cup in which the host country gets an automatic berth and doesn’t have to qualify for the tournament, the host nation of the PBR Cup starts off the competition with an advantage. For the first two editions in 2017 and 2018, the host nation was allowed to field twice as many contestants as the four visiting nations.
It is normally a three-day event wherein 14 riders from the host nation’s team go up against the other 4 teams each comprising of 7 riders. The event trophy comprises of five separate bull horns that represent each of the competing nations. When considered as a whole, the trophy is a representation of the collective spirit of global competition. PBR Global Cup tickets are on sale now and you can buy them to enjoy some great bull riding competition.
The trophy’s bull horn portion also has a vessel for holding the native soil of a particular country. At the opening ceremony of every edition of the tournament, riders from the host team deposit their nation’s dirt in the vessel. The battle for the horn gets underway after that. All teams safeguard their native soil as a matter of honor and pride for their country.
The onus is normally on the home team to perform as per expectations and defend their bull horn at all cost. If the home team is unable to do that, the visiting team that wins the event is awarded these items. The event goes on until one nation has successfully captured all other horns.
Riders at the PBR Global Cup are given prize money on the basis of their team’s overall performance. The amount is normally shared by all the riders on the winning team. The top prize is normally $400,000 (Canadian) whereas the team finishing last splits $42,000 among its riders. Get your PBR Global Cup tickets to enjoy the competition this winter.
Past Winners
The inaugural PBR Global Cup in 2017 was hosted by Canada. The United States went all the way to lift the trophy. For two whole days of competition, each competing team tried to score as much as 14 qualified rides. The winning team was chosen on the basis of the highest combined total of points/marks.Taking place in Edmonton, the tournament handed out the second biggest prize amount in North America. Only the PBR World Finals have paid more.
In 2018, the second edition of the event took place in Australia in which the Brazilians took home the spoils. A record amount of $750,000 (Australian) was paid out to the winners. In a closely fought battle for first place, Brazil ultimately prevailed over hosts Australia to clinch the title. The event was held at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney and the Aussies made the most of their home advantage. It eventually came down to small margins in the end as the Brazilians finished less than a point ahead in the final standings.
