About the North Texas Mean Green Football Team

The North Texas Mean Green football team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA and the West Division of the Conference USA. Over the years, the team has managed to win 24 conference championship titles, and has appeared in the postseason bowl eight times, and four times in the former I-AA Playoffs. These playoffs are now commonly known as the Football Championship Series. The Mean Green’s home ground is the Apogee Stadium, which has a capacity of 30,850 spectators.

History of the North Texas Mean Green Football Team

The team faced some serious financial troubles in the 1980s and 1990s, with the athletics program at the university going into a deficit of $1.6 million. However, thanks to a coordinated campaign by donors, the average attendance was increased enough for the school to re-enter the Division I-A in 1995.

Playing under Darrell Dickey, the team hit a stroke of luck as it managed to win four straight conference championships. Even though the Mean Green finished the regular season at 5-6, they still managed to play in the 2001 New Orleans Bowl. Dickey was fired in November of 2006 after lackluster performances by the team in the eighth and ninth seasons.

The next person hired was Todd Dodge, who was previously the offensive coordinator at UNT. He had been ranked as one of the best college football coaches and had an overall record of 98-11 at the Carol High School in Texas. Even with such a good track record, the coach did not stay for long. He started the 2010 season with an abysmal 1-6 and was subsequently, fired. After him, offensive coordinator Mike Canales was hired as the interim head coach. Soon, the permanent head coach position was filled by Dan McCarney. He had previously been the head coach of Iowa State from 1995 to 2006 and had also been the defensive line coach at the University of South Florida and the University of Florida.

In May of 2012, the school announced that it will be joining the Conference USA, starting with the 2013-2014 season. Other universities that also joined the conference around the same time include the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Louisiana Tech University, University of Texas at San Antonio and the Florida International University. The Mean Green team finished with a record of 9-4 in their first season in the Conference USA. In 2014, the team participated in the Heart of Dallas Bowl and won against the UNLV Rebels by 36-14. This was the team’s first win since 2002.

Following this victory, the team faced a few declining years. In 2014, they finished 4-8, whereas in 2015, they finished 1-11. Dan McCarney was fired after the team lost 66-7 to Portland State. Seth Littrell was then brought into the picture to take charge of the team in 2016.
