The History of a Legendary Franchise

The Mets were established in 1962 as a replacement for the National League’s New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers, who had both moved to the West Coast. The team was initially known for its struggles on the field, with the Mets finishing their first season with a record of 40-120, one of the worst in baseball history.

However, the Mets quickly turned things around, winning their first World Series championship just seven years later in 1969. Led by players like Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Cleon Jones, the “Miracle Mets” shocked the world by defeating the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in the World Series.

The Mets continued to be a competitive team throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with standout players like Keith Hernandez, Darryl Strawberry, and Dwight Gooden leading the way. In 1986, the team won its second World Series championship, defeating the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling seven-game series. The ’86 Mets, as they were known, featured an all-star cast of players and personalities, including Gary Carter, Mookie Wilson, and manager Davey Johnson.

Greatest New York Mets Players

The Mets have had many great players over the years, but a few stand out as true legends of the franchise.

Tom Seaver: Seaver, who played for the Mets from 1967 to 1977 and again in 1983, is widely considered one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. He won three Cy Young Awards and led the Mets to their first World Series championship in 1969.

Mike Piazza: Piazza, who played for the Mets from 1998 to 2005, was one of the most feared hitters in the game during his prime. He was a key member of the 2000 Mets team that reached the World Series.

David Wright: Wright, who played for the Mets from 2004 to 2018, is one of the most beloved players in team history. A seven-time All-Star, Wright was known for his leadership, defensive prowess, and clutch hitting.

Dwight Gooden: Gooden, who played for the Mets from 1984 to 1994, was one of the most dominant pitchers of his era. He won the National League Cy Young Award in 1985 and helped lead the Mets to their second World Series championship in 1986.

The Championships

The Mets have won two World Series championships in their history, in 1969 and 1986.

1969: The “Miracle Mets” shocked the baseball world by winning the World Series in 1969, just seven years after the team’s inaugural season. Led by Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, and Cleon Jones, the Mets defeated the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in five games.

1986: The 1986 Mets are widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in baseball history. Led by a star-studded roster that included Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, and Keith Hernandez, the Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in a thrilling seven-game World Series.

New York Mets Rivalries

The Mets have a number of intense rivalries with other teams, but two stand out as particularly heated:

New York Yankees: The Mets and Yankees are both based in New York City, and their rivalry is one of the most intense in all of sports. The two teams have played each other in the World Series once, with the Yankees winning in 2000. The rivalry is fueled by a deep sense of city pride, as well as the fact that the two teams share a city and a fan base.

Philadelphia Phillies: The Mets and Phillies have been division rivals since the Mets joined the National League East in 1969. The rivalry has intensified in recent years, with the two teams battling for playoff spots and division titles. The rivalry is also fueled by a sense of regional pride, as the two cities are only a few hours apart and have a long history of competition in various fields.
