The Nets in Brief

The Brooklyn Nets began life as one of the charter franchises of the American Basketball Association (ABA), a rival league of the NBA, in 1967. They were known as the New Jersey Americans in their first season but a move to the Long Island the following year meant that a change of name was in order and the team became known as the New York Nets.

During their time in the ABA, the Nets won two league titles in three seasons between 1974 and 1976 before the ABA merged with the NBA. As a result of this merger, the NBA absorbed four ABA franchises with the Nets being one of them. The other three included the Indiana Pacers, the Denver Nuggets and the San Antonio Spurs.

In 1977, the Nets came back to New Jersey and took the name New Jersey Nets. This would be the case until 2012 when the team moved to the newly-constructed Barclays Center in Brooklyn and took the name Brooklyn Nets. Many of the game’s finest players have plied their trade with the Nets over the years such as Hall of Famers Rick Barry, Mel Daniels, Bernard King, Dikembe Mutombo, Maurice Cheeks and Jason Kidd. Furthermore, a number of Hall of Fame inductees have also coached the Nets down the years. These include the likes of Larry Brown, Chuck Daly, and Lou Carnesecca among others. When it comes to playoff opponents, the Nets have frequently faced off against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Detroit Pistons, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat. In addition, they have also played against the Boston Celtics, the Indiana Pacers and the Toronto Raptors a few times. The Nets actually have a perfect postseason record against the Raptors, Celtics and the Pacers.
