Supercross is a derivation of another racing sport, motocross. While motocross is held at outdoor venues, and the obstacles on its tracks are not as difficult to negotiate, Supercross races are held indoors in stadiums and the racing tracks are more technical and difficult to drive on. This increases the element of unpredictability and the general excitement of watching the sport.
History
The inaugural supercross event was held in 1972 at the Los Angeles Coliseum, by famous racing promoter, Michael Goodwin. Featuring the top motocross riders of the day, it was called it the “Super Bowl of Motocross”, and was won by sixteen-year old Marty Tripes. Due to the massive success of the venture, it was picked up by numerous promoters and was called “supercross” to differentiate it from motocross.
Over the years, the sport has become one of the biggest motor sport events in the country. With widespread television coverage, and a plethora of sponsors, the sport has established itself firmly in the country and its popularity has now spilled overseas as well.
Format
The actual supercross event features several races in one day. There are multiple heats followed by a grand finale, where a final winner is crowned. The event features different classes of motorcycles, usually the 450 cc Class and the 250 cc class. There are two heat races in each class, followed by a consolation final. The top nine riders advance from each class, while the other riders are relegated to the consolation race.
