Orlando Magic at a Glance
One of the younger franchises in the NBA today, the Orlando Magic were established as an expansion franchise of the NBA in 1989 during one of the league’s round of expansions. They made their debut in the 1989-90 season and while the initial going was tough, they soon became a very competitive group and regularly made it to the playoffs during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
A number of great players have played for Magic in its short history. These include the likes of Shaquille O’ Neal, Rashard Lewis, Dwight Howard, Hedo Turkoglu, Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady among others.
With the exception of the Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic have the best league record in terms of winning percentage out of all the expansion teams that joined the NBA back in 1988 and 1989. They play their home games at the multi-purpose Amway Center. Catch them in action by getting Magic Playoff tickets.
Magic Playoff Exploits
In total, the Magic have won 6 Division titles and 2 Conference Championships while also making the NBA Finals in 1995 and 2009. The year 1995 remains one of the most successful in the history of the franchise.
Despite having only made their NBA debut during 1989-90, Magic made it all the way to the NBA Finals in 1995, having only made the playoffs once prior to that. Led by the big and powerful center Shaquille O’ Neal, the Orlando Magic stormed to the Division title with an almost 70% win ratio before overcoming big boys such as the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls in the playoffs to secure the Conference title.
They would fall short to the Houston Rockets in the 1995 NBA Finals but this brilliant run was a signal to the rest of the league that the Orlando Magic weren’t there just to make up the numbers. Further success followed during the late 2000s when they won three consecutive Division titles between 2008 and 2010 while also securing their second Conference crown in 2009.
They had the likes of Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu in their ranks and dominated their Division and were a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs. This run also included a second NBA Finals appearance in 2009 when they were undone by the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Orlando Magic boast of impressive postseason records against the Atlanta Hawks and the Boston Celtics. These two, along with the Detroit Pistons and the Indiana Pacers, have been the most frequent opponents for Magic in the playoffs. With the Division title already in the bag, the team from The Sunshine State will be eyeing another Conference triumph as well as a first NBA crown.
