The History of a Legendary Franchise

The Royals were founded in 1969 as an expansion team in the American League. Their first few years were tough, but in the mid-1970s, the team began to improve, thanks to the arrival of young stars like George Brett, Frank White, and Hal McRae. In 1976, the Royals made their first playoff appearance, but they were beaten in the ALCS by the New York Yankees.

The Royals continued to be competitive throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, winning the AL West division in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1980. In 1985, the team finally won their first World Series title, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. George Brett was named the World Series MVP, and the team became known for their dominant bullpen, which included Dan Quisenberry and Willie Wilson.

After their championship, the Royals experienced a period of decline, with only one winning season between 1986 and 2012. However, the team rebuilt in the early 2010s, and in 2014 and 2015, they made back-to-back World Series appearances, winning the championship in 2015 against the New York Mets.

The Greatest Kansas City Royals Players

The Royals have had a number of great players over the years, but perhaps the most legendary is George Brett. Brett played for the Royals from 1973 to 1993 and was known for his hitting ability and his fiery personality. He won three batting titles, was a 13-time All-Star, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

Another great player from the Royals' championship teams of the 1980s is Bret Saberhagen. Saberhagen was a dominant pitcher who won the Cy Young Award in 1985 and 1989. He was named the World Series MVP in 1985 and was a two-time All-Star.

In recent years, the Royals have had a number of talented players, including Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez, and Lorenzo Cain. Hosmer was a key player in the team's championship run in 2015, while Perez has won multiple Gold Glove Awards and was named the World Series MVP in 2015. Cain was also a key player in the 2015 championship, and he has won a Gold Glove and a stolen base title.

The Championships

The Royals have won two World Series titles in their history. The first came in 1985, when they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. The second came in 2015, when they defeated the New York Mets in five games.

The 1985 championship team is still remembered fondly by Royals fans. The team was known for their dominant bullpen, which included Dan Quisenberry, who led the league in saves that year, and Willie Wilson, who led the league in stolen bases. The team also had a number of talented hitters, including George Brett, who hit .335 that season.

The 2015 championship team was perhaps even more surprising. The Royals had finished the regular season with a record of 95-67 and were dominant in the postseason. They defeated the Mets in five games, with Salvador Perez named the World Series MVP.

The Kansas City Royals Rivalries

The Royals have a number of rivalries, both within their division and outside of it. One of the Royals' biggest rivalries is with the St. Louis Cardinals. The two teams are located relatively close to each other and play each other in interleague games every year. Their rivalry dates back to the 1985 World Series, in which the Royals defeated the Cardinals in seven games. The two teams have met a total of 105 times, with the Cardinals holding a slight edge in the all-time series.

The Royals also have a rivalry with the Detroit Tigers, who are also in the American League Central division. The two teams have played each other over 500 times, with the Tigers holding a slight edge in the all-time series. Their rivalry has heated up in recent years, with both teams competing for division titles and playoff spots.
