By April 2012, Georgia State officially announced its decision to move to Sun Belt Conference for all its spots, while taking the football team to Football Bowl Subdivision, which is the top-most level for collegiate football. The school plays its basketball games at GSU Sports Arena, football games at Georgia Dome and Baseball games at the GSU baseball complex. Georgia State Panthers tickets are exceedingly popular among college students, particularly those for football games.
Georgia State gained complete accreditation from the athletics program of NCAA Division I in 1963-64, due to which it could for the first time award scholarships to students competing at the top most collegiate level. By 1976-77, Georgia State Panthers were being counted among the six charter members of Sun Belt Conference, but after five seasons with the organization, decided to break the affiliation. In 1984-85, it entered Trans America Athletic Conference, competing with the group for twenty-one years, in which time the conference altered its title to the present Atlantic Sun Conference.
The university soon started sponsoring varsity teams for women during 1974-75, competing in tennis, volleyball, soccer and basketball at Division I level of NCAA. The following year, they started women’s cross country, and their teams were participating against programs in the Southeast. The women’s teams entered the TAAC in 1991, when it started sponsoring sports. Prior to that, they had been members of New South Women Athletic Conference, since 1984-85.
With the help of automatic conference bids, Georgia State Panthers’ seventeen teams have made the highest goals while competing in postseason NCAA in women’s outdoor track, women’s indoor track, men’s tennis, women’s golf, men’s golf, women’s softball and cross country, men’s volleyball and soccer, men’s basketball and women’s basketball. During 1997 and 2003, GSU men’s basketball team played under coach Lefty Driesell, one of the most winning coaches in the history of Division I. In July 2005, the GSU left Atlantic Sun Conference and joined Colonial Athletic Association.
The following year, the Panthers marked their first two wins as conference championships, winning in women’s and men’s golf as members of CAA. The Panthers’ football team has been playing under head coach Bill Curry, starting in the college football season of 2010. They won their first football game in September 2010, at home against Shorter University in the presence of more than thirty thousand, two hundred audiences. The Panthers continue to surprise their fans with extraordinary wins, so just grab some Georgia State Panthers tickets and be there to watch the invincible teams charging about.
