Floyd Mayweather’s fight against Conor McGregor has been in the news for months now. Both camps have been going at it through mainstream media and social media and now it certainly looks as though it will happen. Mayweather vs McGregor is huge and millions around the world cannot wait to see it take place.

Floyd Mayweather Jr is one such example who was born in Michigan in 1977. He was born into a boxing family so it is fair to say that he inherited boxing in his blood as his father was a professional boxer and his uncles also boxed as professionals. His interest in boxing was evident at very young age and he started boxing when he was only seven years old. He was trained by his uncle initially as his father went behind bars but later he was trained by his father.

Floyd Mayweather Jr has been known for his fabulous defensive techniques including shoulder roll which have helped him receive somewhat less scars as compared to his competitors. This has been the reason he is mostly referred to as the Pretty Boy. As an amateur, he won three national Golden Gloves Championships, one in 1993, then in the following year and another in 1996. Later that year at the age of 19, he participated in Atlanta Olympics and by beating Lorenzo Aragon, who was a Cuban, in quarterfinals; he became the first U.S. boxer in twenty years to beat a Cuban. However, he could not go on to the Olympics finals due to a controversial decision in the semis and ended up winning a bronze medal in 1996 Olympics. He won most of his fights by either knocking out his opponent or due to technical knockout during the period of 1996 to 1998. He won his first world title in 1999 by beating Genaro Hernandez in WBC Super Featherweight Championship.

It is hard to match parents’ expectations and conflicting issues are common in families and Floyd Mayweather Jr was no exception. His father was coaching him but he fired his father from the coaching position in the year 2000 as he felt enormous pressure from his dad to be perfect. Afterwards, his uncle took the coaching position again. His boxing match against Diego Corrales in January 2001 for super featherweight champion is considered to be his biggest fight as both boxers were neither defeated nor knocked down before this match in their entire career. Mayweather Jr won this match and established himself as one of the winners of legendary pound for pound title in boxing. He was knocked out for the first time by Carlos Famos Herna’ndez during a fight in May 2001 but the match was ultimately won by him. This fight is also significantly captured in More than Famous which is an award winning documentary film. He has defended the WBC Super Featherweight title for almost eight times and held it for more than three years. He has been a committed professional and before weigh in for his last fight at this title, which he won, he did not eat for four days because he had difficulty in making his weight.

Floyd Mayweather Jr moved up to the lightweight category in 2002 and even though he fought less number of fights at this division but all the fights were rated as world championship fights and he won all of them. Afterwards, he moved up to the super lightweight category and his success in this division also continued. His wins in this category including the win against Arturo Gatti established him as one of the best pound for pound fighter in the world. He returned from his short retirement in 2007 to fight Ricky Hatton who was a light welterweight champion. During the promotions of this match he compared himself, with the great Ali and Robinson by claiming that this is his time. He won the match and retained welterweight championship title but he acknowledged his opponent as being one of the toughest fighters he ever faced by complimenting him.
