Conor McGregor’s Career

Since his debut fight in the UFC in 2013, where he beat Marcus Brimage in just over a minute, McGregor has never looked back. The entire sport of mixed martial arts realized that a legend had arrived and with a little bit of polishing, he just might become one of the greatest fighters of all time. By his third fight, McGregor was already beginning to appear as an attraction and his growing fan base started treating him like a conquering hero. His style of verbally and physically embarrassing his opponents in harsh terms soon made him one of the most feared names in the sport all around the world.

Conor McGregor was born and raised in Dublin. He developed a deep rooted interest in combat sports at a very early age. His interest began to develop while he played association football for the Lourdes Celtic Football Club. Soon he started kickboxing when he was only 12 years old. Here he got the chance to train under the likes of Jamie Kavanagh and Dean Byrne. It wasn’t long before McGregor became a  junior All-Ireland boxing champion. After moving to Lucan, West Dublin in 2006, McGregor met future Tom Egan, himself a UFC Fighter and began his MMA training with him.

McGregor’s debut fight was in February 2007 when he was just 18 years old. He took on Kieran Campbell in that bout and recorded his first victory through a TKO during the very first round. That fight made McGregor realize he should be doing this for a living. So it wasn’t long before he signed with the Irish Cage of Truth Promotion and began training at the Straight Blast Gym in Dublin.

Beginnings of a Professional Career

Following success on the amateur circuit, McGregor first MMA fight as a professional came in the lightweight category, when he defeated Gary Morris. After several wins and a few losses in both lightweight and featherweight fight, McGregor was soon offered a contract by the UFC.

Conor McGregor became the second Irish man in history to have a UFC contract. His first fight against Brimage was so impressive that it earned him the award for the “Knockout of the Night”. After his second fight (and second victory) in the UFC against Max Holloway, McGregor suffered an injury to his ligament, that ruled him out of action for around ten months.

In the year 2014, McGregor was back in action to face Diego Brandao. He won the fight in the first round through a TKO and got McGregor his second straight “Performance of the Night” award. Then came early 2015, when McGregor faced Dennis Silver at the UFC Fight Night 59. Again, McGregor was victorious and landed the “Performance of the Night” award. In the summer of 2015, McGregor faced Chad Mendes for the interim featherweight championship. He won the fight and his fourth straight “Performance of the Night” award. Towards the end of the year, he beat Jose Aldo at UFC 194.

The year 2016 started with the first loss for the star against Nate Diaz. However, in the rematch four months later, McGregor managed to win. This match had the highest pay-per-view in the history of UFC with around 1,650,000 buys.
