The Chase Field, home to the MLB’s Arizona Diamondbacks, will be the venue for this encounter.
Cheez-It Bowl
The Cheez-It Bowl has become one of the most popular events in Arizona since its inaugural edition took place in 1989. Over the years, the bowl game has undergone various name changes owing to the different sponsors and supporting partners.
From 1989 till 1996, it was known as the Copper Bowl. This changed to the Insight.com Bowl in 1997 and stayed that way until 2001. From 2002 through to 2011, it was the Insight Bowl before Buffalo Wild Wings took over sponsorship for the games in 2012 and 2013. After being known as the Cactus Bowl from 2014 to 2017, it became the Cheez-It Bowl in 2018.
The Arizona Stadium on the University of Arizona campus was the game’s first home. It has since been played at the Chase Field as well as the Sun Devil Stadium. The latter serves as the permanent home of the Cheez-It Bowl with the game expected to move back there once renovation work on the arena is completed.
All in all, 21 college teams have appeared more than once in the Cheez-It Bowl. The Kansas State Wildcats lead the way, having featured 4 times and compiled a 3-1 record. Next up are the California Golden Bears and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, both of whom have played in the Cheez-It Bowl on 3 occasions each. You can watch the Falcons and the Cougars battling it out in 2019 by getting Cheez It Bowl tickets.
Air Force Falcons
The Air Force Falcons, representing the US Air Force Academy, compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA Division I. They have been a part of the FBS’s Mountain West Conference since its inception in 1999. The Falcon Stadium, located on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy, is the Falcons’ home turf.
The proud flag-bearers of the US Air Force have a distinguished history in college football. They are 3-time Western Athletic Conference Champions as well as winners of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy on 20 occasions. Moreover, the Falcons have competed against the Colorado State Rams for the Ram-Falcon Trophy since 1980. The overall record is 21-4 in favor of the Air Force.
Till now, the Falcons have been involved in over 25 bowl games with a winning percentage of almost 50. The most prominent battles have been against the Vanderbilt Commodores, Arizona State Sun Devils, Washington Huskies, California Golden Bears, Western Michigan Broncos, and the Fresno State Bulldogs among others.
Washington State Cougars
The Washington State Cougars are distinguished college football representatives of the Washington State University. They compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Cougars are part of the FBS’s Pac-12 Conference where they play their games in the North Division.
Established in the 1890s, the football program of the Washington State University is one of the oldest in the nation. The college fielded its first team in 1894 and hasn’t looked back since. The team plays its home games at the Martin Stadium located on the campus of the Washington State University. It has a capacity to hold more than 33,000 ardent football fans on any game-day.
One of the Cougars’ biggest rivalries is with the Washington Huskies. Both teams often end their regular season by playing in the Apple Cup. This was first played in 1900 and was known as the “Governor’s Trophy” until 1961. In 1962, the name Apple Cup was adopted as a reference to Washington’s reputation as being a major apple producer.
The Cougars are 4-time Conference champions, having captured the big prize twice each in both the Pacific-10 and the Pacific Coast conferences. To date, the side from Pullman has played in over a dozen college bowl games with a winning percentage of more than 50. They will surely be up for it when the Cheez-It Bowl against the Air Force Falcons gets underway. If you haven’t done so already, get your Cheez It Bowl tickets today!
