History and Formation

All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is a professional wrestling promotion based in Jacksonville, Florida. It was founded in 2019 by CEO Tony Khan and his father, Shahid Khan, the owner of Jacksonville Jaguars. AEW has quickly become one of the biggest names in pro wrestling with its unique blend of high-flying action and hard-hitting brawling. AEW was born out of the success of All Elite Wrestling’s predecessor, The Elite.

The Elite originally consisted of wrestlers Cody Rhodes, Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson, Kenny Omega, Marty Scurll and Hangman Page. Together they created a new style of sports entertainment that blended high-octane athleticism with compelling storytelling - something that was previously unseen in pro wrestling. This “Elite Style” has since become synonymous with AEW.

The formation of AEW began to take shape when Khan purchased the rights to use the name from Ring Of Honor (ROH). Following this purchase, a number of prominent figures within the industry began to show interest in AEW including former WWE Superstar Chris Jericho who is now an executive vice president for the company.

As word spread about AEW’s ambitious plans for world domination, more wrestlers and other talent began to sign on with the promotion - all eager to be part of this new era in professional wrestling. Since its launch in January 2019, AEW has already made major waves throughout the industry and established itself as one of pro wrestling’s top promotions.

It hosts weekly television shows on TNT as well as regular pay-per-view events featuring some of today’s greatest stars from around the world such as Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, Chris Jericho and Cody Rhodes. With its rapidly increasing popularity and groundbreaking approach towards sports entertainment, there is no telling how far All Elite Wrestling can go!

All In Sets the Tone

In May of 2017, it was reported that Ring of Honor had failed to sell even ten thousand tickets for an event. This claim received a response from Cody Rhodes, as well as The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson). All three were not only members of the ROH roster at that time, but were also very good friends. They decided to hold an event independently in September of 2018. The wrestlers taking part in the event were from Ring of Honor and other companies. The event was named All In and it was a massive success. The tickets for the show sold out in just half an hour and it was attended by the biggest crowd ever in the US, outside of WCW and WWE sanctioned events, since 1993. 11,263 fans turned up to watch All In and it received a lot of acclaim. All In featured stars such as Kenny Omega, Christopher Daniels, Jay Lethal, Penta El Zero, Rey Mysterio, Matt and Nick Jackson, Cody Rhodes, Hangman Page, Frankie Kazarian, and Scorpio Sky, among others. To say that the event was exciting would be an understatement.

The Arrival of All Elite Wrestling

  • Formed – January 1, 2019.
  • Founder – Tony Khan.
  • Owners – Shahid Khan and Tony Khan.
  • First AEW World Champion – Chris Jericho.
  • First AEW TNT Champion – Cody Rhodes.
  • First AEW Women’s World Champion – Riho.

Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks left Ring of Honor shortly afterwards. According to some reports, they were offered new deals by World Wrestling Entertainment, but those offers were turned down as they had ambitions of their own. On November 5, 2018, multiple trademarks were filed in Jacksonville, including names such as All Elite Wrestling, AEW, Double or Nothing, All Out, AEW All Out, AEW Double or Nothing, and Tuesday Night Dynamite, as well as several logos. This gave away the impending arrival of All Elite Wrestling.

The promotion was officially announced on January 1, 2019 via Being the Elite, a YouTube web series, in which the announcement was made about Double or Nothing as a sequel to All In. The very next day, The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes joined All Elite Wrestling officially, becoming not only part of the roster, but also co-Executive Vice Presidents of the promotion. Tony Khan, son of billionaire Shahid Khan, was announced as the President, with both of them being owners of All Elite Wrestling.

The Press Conferences

On January 8, 2019, the first press conference was held by AEW at the TIAA Bank Field. The company announced its first lineup of stars, and then came the shock that reverberated throughout the professional wrestling community. The legendary Chris Jericho made an appearance at the press conference and announced that he had signed with All Elite Wrestling. This was a huge statement from the new promotion.

AEW held its second press conference on February 7, 2019, where new members of the roster were announced. That list contained one of the most sought-after stars outside of the WWE, Kenny Omega..

Double or Nothing Debuts

"Double or Nothing" was AEW's first ever PPV and it turned out to be a big hit. The event's card had a total of nine matches, with the main event pitting Chris Jericho against Kenny Omega. Jericho won the match and earned the right to face Adam Page for the first ever AEW World Championship bout at "All Out".
