About The Toasters

The entrepreneur Hingley soon formed his own record label which he named Moon Ska Records. This label became America’s largest independent ska label within a few years. The first full length album by The Toasters called Skaboom was released two years after the EP. This album proved the competency of this newly emerged band in the country. ‘Thrill Me Up’ and ‘This Gun for Hire’ were released in 1988 and 1990 respectively and produced some incredible singles.

With the beginning of next decade, the band witnessed constant lineup changes. More than twenty members joined and left the band, with Hingley being the only one from the original lineup till date. Few of the prominent band members who have contributed for several years include Coolie Ranx, the vocalist; Johnathan McCain the drummer; Dave Barry the keyboardist and Matt Malles the bassist. Apart from them, Freddie Reiter, Erick Storckman, Rick Faulkner and Lester Sterling have also remained prominent former members.

During the mid nineties, The Toasters released the two most successful albums of their career; Hard Band for Dead and Don’t Let the Bastards Grind You Down became public in 1996 and 1997 respectively, and peaked at number 8 and 12 position. The ensemble stepped into the new millennium with the most awaited compilation: ‘In Retrospect: the Best of the Toasters’. Overall, the band has released ten studio records, seven compilations and five live albums, most of which have been recorded with Moon Ska Records. It also incorporates a touch of pop/rock, alternative/ indie rock and punk in their compositions. Other popular albums from the nineties period include ‘New York Fever’ and ‘Dub 56’. The latest studio album ‘One More Bullet’ and the compilation record ‘Ska Is Dead’ were released in the year 2007, which celebrated the twenty fifth anniversary of this ska band.

The Toasters have enjoyed and remained the most popular band in the era of third wave ska and gained recognition all across the North America. Some of their songs have been used in commercials for Coca-Cola and America Online, and have also been featured on live shows, along with the animated series ‘Mission Hill’.
