Warpaint is an American psychedelic rock band, formed in 2004 in Los Angeles, California, by Theresa Wayman (vocals, guitar), Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (vocals, bass) and Shannyn Sossamon on drums. Sossamon left in 2008 and made way for Stella Mozgawa to join the band in 2009. With a committed lineup, the band began experimenting with indie tunes and stripped-down arrangements. Their unique sound enabled them to quickly come into the notice of movers and shakers of the music industry, such as the former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante. And now the girls are out and about, putting on stellar performances for their fans. Grab these Warpaint Tickets - Warpaint Concert Tickets to get in on all the fun!
It was Valentine’s Day back in 2004 when four women got together and decided to start a rock band. They were old friends Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar, keyboard) and Theresa Wayman (vocals, synthesizer, guitar, drums), along with sisters Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals) and Shannyn Sossamon (drums, vocals). They started by performing all over Los Angeles to make a name for themselves, before releasing their debut album, “The Fool” in 2010. The record made it on to the Billboard charts and also made it to number forty one in the UK. Now you can watch them perform as well. Book your Warpaint tickets and enjoy their show, live.
Warpaint managed to gather a lot of critical acclaim within the first few years of their formation. Lets take a look at what the band has been up to.
Warpaint Music
After formation in 2004, the band played in the Los Angeles area for three years, writing songs and putting together tunes that would eventually become a part of their first EP. With help from John Frusciante, the band released their debut EP, Exquisite Corpse, in 2008. The producer for the album was Jacob Bercovici and the recording sessions took more than two months. The band self-released the EP, and it quickly went on to the No. 1 spot on the Los Angeles Amoeba Records local artist chart. A year later, the album was released all over the world by Manimal Vinyl and received widespread critical acclaim. Their song “Elephants” also got featured in a 2011 horror film, Siren.
Shortly after this, the band signed on to a different label and began extensive touring all over the United States and Europe.
After their EP, the band came out with their debut album titled The Fool, in 2010. This album received positive reviews from various critics. Warpaint toured the US and Europe for promoting this album. They played their music at various festivals including Bonnaroo, Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds Festivals, Summer Sundae, Rock Werchter, Electric Picnic and Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. In 2011, they released the track “Undertow” again and it ended up charting in the UK at No.92 and in Australia at No. 75.
In 2014, the band released their second studio album, titled Warpaint. It was produced by Flood and the band itself and was released on Rough Trade Records. This dream pop album received mostly positive reviews from reviewing and rating bodies such as AllMusic, Metacritic, Alternative Press, Drowned in Sound, DIY, FACT, The Quietus and so on. Various phrases were used to describe this new piece of work from the band, including “virtuosic and exquisite”, “romantic but unglamorous” and “devastatingly brooding as ever”.
With such wonderful reviews and a strong support and enthusiasm of their fans, the band is all set to release its third studio album, titled Heads Up, in September 2016, with the same record label as before, Rough Trade Records. The recording sessions for this album started in January of this year with producer Jacob Bercovici at the helm.
The Sound of Warpaint
Warpaint gives its listeners a very unique and different kind of a sound. The sparse, atmospheric art rock that they create is something fans are not likely to find elsewhere. With intricate guitars and gentle vocals, the band’s style has been described as “intermittently emerging from plaintive moods into harder rocking, they play expansive, lushly-harmonic psych-rock songs with enough time-changes to satisfy even the most beardy prog-rock bong-tokers". They have been compared to acts such as Cocteau Twins, Joni Mitchell and Siouxsie and the Banshees. The all-girl quartet produces hypnotic vocals and turns driving post-punk rhythms into amazing sprawling songs that revolve around psychedelia and intimacy.
The All-Girl Quartet Factor
Warpaint is an entirely different league of girl bands. They are striking as a quartet and deliver an unusual sense of warmth and connection with the crowd – smiling, laughing, talking, according to The Guardian. The girls are practically inseparable and have been so since they first became friends at the mere age of 11.
If you want to catch these young girls live in action, here is your chance. Grab these Warpaint Tickets - Warpaint Concert Tickets at the earliest and head on over to find out what these four interesting women are all about.
The rock and roll industry has always been primarily a boys club. Even though many female musicians have come into the mainstream over the years, most of them did it when accompanied by an all male backing band. Even today, all-girl rock bands are hard to find, and only a handful have enjoyed some form of success over the years, like the “Runaways”, “Fanny”, “the Bangles”, and “the Go Go’s” to name a few. Yet, in today’s changing political and cultural climate, an increasing amount of women have started to realize their dreams and follow in the footsteps of their rock idols. One of the most popular all girls rock band leading this revolution is Warpaint.
Hiding in the shadows
Warpaint is an all-girls rock band that has been part of the music business for over ten years now and in that time they have built up quite a following for themselves. Their dedication to experiment with their music has drawn praise from all quarters and has helped them develop as a band.
They have risen to the top of the mountain in a relatively short time and this is a testament to their unique ability to do things entirely their own way. Now you can see their performance for yourself as well. Just book your Warpaint tickets and watch them hit the right notes live.
No way out
The band was formed twelve years ago and originally consisted of Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar, keyboard), Theresa Wayman (vocals, synthesizer, guitar, drums), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals) and Shannyn Sossamon (drums, vocals). The latter two were sisters and they met their band mates while trying to find work in Los Angeles. On the other hand, Kokal and Wayman had known each other for a very long time and were the best of friends, traveling all over Europe and the US together, before finally deciding to start a rock band together on Valentine’s Day, 2004.
Over the next three years the band toured extensively over the Los Angeles area and built up quite a reputation in the city’s underground rock music world. At the same time they continued to work on original material as well and when they were sure that they had a few good songs under their belt, they approached producer Jacob Bercovici in order to record an EP. Called “Exquisite Corpse”, it came out in 2008, and even though it did not enjoy much financial success, they did manage to impress critics everywhere.
Time to believe
Warpaint released their debut album, titled “The Fool” in 2010 and saw it make it to the Billboard charts, on number one hundred and seventy six. It also made it to number seventy five on the Ireland music charts and number forty one on the UK music charts. The record topped the UK Independent Albums Breakers Charts and went all the way to number four on the U.S. Billboard Heatseekers Albums. It also managed to sell over sixty thousand copies in the UK, and over a hundred and fifty thousand copies around the world.
They released their follow up, self titled, record in 2014, and it managed to do even better than its predecessor. It made it to number nine on the UK Music charts, number three in Ireland and number thirteen in Germany. It also made it into the top fifty of several music charts around the world, including the US, Australia, New Zealand and many more. If you want to check out some of their songs for yourself as well, then here is your chance. Just book your Warpaint tickets and watch this unbelievable all girls rock band as they rock out on the stage, live.
