Toto is one of few bands in history to have made a huge impact on pop music culture with their recorded music. Individually the band members of Toto have sold over half a billion albums and astonishingly they can be heard in close to five thousand albums. As an ensemble, they are regarded among the most experienced and celebrated session musicians of all time.
The band was formed in 1977 and its current line-up comprises of guitarist/vocalist Steve Lukather, keyboardists David Paich and Steve Porcaro, drummer Simon Phillips and the front man Joseph Williams. Toto has enjoyed great commercial success from the beginning; their debut self-titled album was packed with hit singles like "Georgy Porgy", "I’ll Supply the Love" and "Hold the Line" all of which made it to the US Top 50. The album itself was certified two-times Platinum with its sales exceeding the 2 million mark.
The album which yielded countless accolades for the band was, "Toto IV" which is widely regarded as one of their most successful records. It came out in 1982 and immediately exploded the country’s charts with hits like "I Won’t Hold You Back", "Rosanna" and "Africa". The album led to seven Grammy Awards including an "Album of the Year" award and "Record of the Year" for the single Rosanna. This album stayed at the top for many years and also managed to clinch position in various charts around the globe, opening the band to newer audiences.
In 1982, the band’s record titled, "Isolation" was released; laced with a heavier rock edge this album was an instant favorite among their fans. The first single from this album, "Stranger in Town" reached the Billboard Hot 100 and became the band’s fourth highest charting single. Four years and another album later, Steve Lukather travelled to Japan in 1986 where he shared the stage with legendary guitarists Carlos Santana and Jeff Beck. The next studio effort by Toto, "The Seventh One" became one of their best sellers. The album charted in many territories and sold millions of copies around the globe.
With the start of the nineties, Toto was without any lead vocalist with Joseph leaving the band and no new singer to fill in his shoes; Lukatheer stepped up and took the microphone as the ensemble’s new front-man. Afterwards in 1991 they played at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival and also recorded their eighth studio album, "Kingdom of Desire". A year later the band almost broke up after the unfortunate death of drummer Jeff Porcaro but on insistence from Jeff’s family the group continued to tour and brought in the new drummer, Simmon Phillips who had previously worked with Steve Lukatheer.
After a brief break of working on outside and individual projects, the group again reunited in 1995 and rocked the stages in a string of exciting summer festivals all across Europe. Here they showcased singles from their record, "Tambu" which remained immensely popular in Europe and Japan. For their 20th anniversary in 1997, the band started to search through all their old demos and records which ultimately led to the release of a very special album, "Toto XX". A year later, Bobby Kimball re-joined Toto after a gap of nearly fourteen years. The band has released a total of 12 studio albums to date with their latest one, "Falling in Between" making in charts all over Europe.
Toto has a history of over 35 years of playing together and have therefore earned thousands of credits and countless accolades. They are widely regarded as one of the best touring acts and the top selling artists of all time. The ensemble has worked with every major music label for the past 25 years and has placed their stamp of excellence on CD shelves all around the world. Among their various prizes are five Grammys and an Edison Award for "Lifetime Achievement". More recently in 2009 they were induced in the Musicians Hall Of Fame and in 2010 became the recipients of the Eddie Christiani Award.
Toto is a benchmark for the entire musical community and with their latest tour dates announced, their eager fans can’t wait to get their hands on Toto tickets.
