He next ventured into a forming a partnership with local songwriter and producer, Charlton Pettus. It was decided that they would be writing simple based melody songs and record them at home on Vintage based analogue equipment.

However as the new millennium approached things once again took a drastic turn for both the artists. In 2000 both Smith and Orzabal had to come into contact due to some routine paperwork. The artists met an after a brief awkward silence they both decided to work together again. Till date this duo has sold over thirty million album copies worldwide. The duo has inspired many to follow their footsteps and formed the basis of inspiration for the very successful Australian pop duo, Savage Garden.
