EI-P and Killer Mike

One half of Run the Jewels, EI-P is from Brooklyn. Born as Jamie Meline, he started pursuing music after being expelled from several schools. EI-P soon met Mr. Len with whom he formed, Company Flow in 1993. They released their first vinyl single in the same year, Juvenile Techniques. They were later joined by Justin Ingleton or better known by his stage name, Bigg Jus and the trio came out with its first extended play, ‘Funcrusher in 1996.

The group was later dissolved in 2001 and EI-P kicked off his solo career by recording his debut album, ‘Fantastic Damage’ which hit the stores in 2002. It achieved critical success and was ranked as the eleventh best album of 2002 by Pitchfork Media. He then came out with two more studio records, ‘I’ll Sleep When You Are Dead’ and ‘Cancer for Cure’ out of which the latter was included in Stereogum’s list of the, ‘Top 50 Albums of 2012.’

The second half of Run the Jewels, Michael Render or known to the world as, Killer Mike is a Georgia native. Before the release of his first album, he recorded a couple of singles with OutKast out of which, The Whole World won a Grammy Award in the category of, ‘Best Rap Performance By a Duo or a Group.’

Killer Mike’s debut studio effort, ‘Monster’ arrived in the markets in 2003 and climbed to the fourth spot on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. It also received four stars out of five from AllMusic. He recorded four more studio albums after that including his most recent, ‘R.A.P Music’ which saw the light of day in 2012. It got great reviews from the critics and was mentioned in Rolling Stones’ list of the, ‘Top 50 Albums of 2012.’

The dawn of Run the Jewels

EI-P was introduced to Killer Mike by Cartoon Network executive, Jason DeMarco in 2011. Both individuals took off on a tour together after they released their studio albums, ‘Cure for Cancer’ and ‘R.A.P Music.’ They soon decided to form a band and branded themselves as Run the Jewels.

The group signed a record deal with Fool’s Gold Records and released its first self-titled studio album in 2013. It was produced by EI-P, Wilder Zoby and Little Shalimar and received rave reviews from the critics. It received 8.5/10 rating from Pitchfork Media’s Nate Patrin who stated, “Yeah, it's a fun album, and it's probably the most affable thing they've done so far together. But don't take that for a weakness. They don't yank chains-- they snatch them.”

The duo released their second studio album, ‘Run the Jewels 2’ one year later in 2014 via Mass Appeal. The album once again did not fail to impress the critics and got four stars out of five from the Rolling Stone. It also charted at ninth spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
