The band soon left Alaska and moved to Portland to record its albums. Since its inception in 2005, the band has released seven studio albums and three EPs. The band?s first album, Waiter: You Vultures was released on the Fearless Records in January 2006 and its second album, Church Mouth in June 2007. The two full length albums have been produced by Casey Bates.

The band has released its first two albums on the Fearless Records and a few others on Equal Vision Records.  In 2008, the band broke its deal with the Fearless Records and released its third album, Censored Colors on an independent record label, Approaching AIRballoons in collaboration with Equal Vision Records. After the successful release of this album, John Gourley was nominated for the 2008 AP Magazine's Best Vocalist of the Year Award.

The band released its fourth full-length album, The Satanic Satanist in July 2009 in which John Gourley details the memories and stories of his life in Alaska. Its fifth studio album, American Ghetto was released in February 2010 but no copies of the album were sold before the release date. After the release of the fifth album, the band signed to Atlantic Records in April 2010. In the Mountain in the Cloud is the sixth full length album of the band that was released in July 2011. Some of the famous singles of the album include We Got It All, Once Was One, All Your Light, So American, You Carried Us and Sleep Forever.  Released in June 2013, Evil Friends is the seventh studio album of the band that has been produced with the joint efforts of Portugal. The Man and the producer, Danger Mouse.

Portugal. The Man is an outstanding band with unique voice and good instrumentation. The band puts on an absolutely seamless show that leaves everyone in the audience either teary-eyed or contently speechless. Their words and music are linked together harmoniously which provides an amazing concert experience to the people in attendance. The crowd begins to scream out of excitement as soon as the band appears on stage. The music is so fantastic that many people just cannot remain glued to their seats but sing and dance to the brilliant numbers. Overall, the atmosphere is fun and there is a great vibe from the crowd because the band keeps on dropping hit after hit that continues to enthrall the fans. 

The band has an excellent presence on stage because its music is a great mix of several genres. The band plays in very limited lighting and that sets the right mood for a memorable performance. The awesome lighting effects make the stage look more awesome than it really is. All in all, the band puts on a flawless and crowd-pleasing show. This is why Portugal.
