Nightwish is a symphonic metal band belonging to Kitee, Finland. The band came into existence in 1996. Toumas Holopainen, who had been playing keyboard for several heavy metal groups for half a decade, one day while sitting with his friends decided to form a group of his own. After that night around the campfire, the friends got together and started working on their decision. Emppu Vuorinen the guitarist and Tarja Turunen along with Holopainen worked hard and by the winter of 1996 released their self titled debut album. Nightwish decided to shift from their soft music style to heavy metal because their vocalist Turunen had a very strong voice, which couldn’t go along with the acoustic guitars. For that very purpose, Julius Nevalainen, an electronic guitarist was included in the band. Their seven-track second demo "Angels Fall First" caught the attention of "Spinefarm Records" which offered them a record deal. With the label, the band released the full length demo in the November of 1997.
The demo managed to make it to Finnish Album Chart at #31. Their song The Carpenter reached the "Singles Chart" at #3. Their initial attempts at albums and singles received mixed criticism. By the end of December, the Nightwish performed their first ever concert in their very own hometown of Kitee. For a year, the band managed to arrange only seven performances, because Holopainen and Nevalainen had to serve in Finnish army while Turunen had to finish her high school.
Nightwish released their second album titled "Oceanborn" which included progressive and more technical sound than their previous efforts. The new release was a success and the songs were labeled as "very strong." Mainstream success was reached after the release of band’s third album "Wishmaster" in May of 2000. The album topped Finnish Album Chart at number one right off. Soon it was certified gold and spent three months on the top of the charts. It was also featured on Rock Hard, a German magazine, as the "Album of the Month."
Nightwish released three new songs in 2001 . Over the Hills and Far Away was cover of Gary Moore’s song and the two other tracks were Astral Romance and Away. Their version of Gary Moore’s cover was an instant success among the masses. The band faced a number of internal disputes right after the release of the new tracks. During that time, Holopainen had decided to break the band, however changing the decision later. With some changes in the lineup and management, Nightwish got together for the recording of yet another album.
Nightwish released "Once" in June of 2004. The album’s track Nemo was a great success, and the record also made it to different charts in Hungary and Finnish. With the success of their latest album, they embarked on the "Once World Tour" around the globe. Nightwish also performed at World Championship in Athletic 2005’s opening ceremony. The band released "Dark Passion Play" in September of 2007. After the album received initial success, they embarked on their longest tour till date, "The Dark Passion Play Tour." The tour lasted from 2007 to 2005.
Nightwish initially used to have a touch of fantasy to their lyrics; however that changed over time, as told by the lyricist. Recordings that took place in the later years were very much similar to the writings of Edgar Alan Poe and Stephen King. Their one particular song 7 Days of the Wolves was inspired by The Dark Tower by Stephen King. They have a number of their songs inspired from "The Lord of the Rings" novel as well.
