Michael Nesmith is a famous American artist from Houston, Texas, renowned for his rock and pop music, often combined with country and various flavors of pop and rock. He is a singer, a songwriter and a musician who plays the guitar, organ, piano and harmonica. He is also an author, an actor, a writer, a producer and the owner of a company, the Pacific Arts Corporation. Michael Nesmith is also a famous songwriter, known for writing hits sung by the like of Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys. He is also a producer, credited with such hit movies as the Repo Man, released in 1984. He is also labeled as the founder of the music video genre, having won the first ever Grammy Award for the Video of the Year, in 1981, for his work on the TV show Elephant Parts.
He was raised by his mother, after his parents divorces when he was four years old. His mother worked at a number of jobs, going on to invent a typewriter correction fluid known later on as Liquid Paper. She went on to found the Liquid Paper Corporation, turning it into an international corporation which was later on sold to Gillette for a mind blowing forty eight million dollars in 1979. While studying at the Thomas Jefferson High School, he took part in choral and drama activities and, at the age of fifteen, went to study at the Dallas Theater Center teen program.
After high school, Michael enlisted into the US Air Force, completing basic training and obtaining his GED at the same time. He was then honorably discharged following which he went on to study at the San Antonio College where he began a musical collaboration with John London. He then moved to Los Angeles where he began his songwriting career and started singing at a number of local venues, performing with many artists. He was offered a publishing deal by Randy Sparks of the New Christy Minstrels for his songs. It was here that he caught the attention of Barry Friedman, known better as Rev. Frazier Mohawk, leading to a role in the TV series, The Monkees.
In 1969, Michael Nesmith founded the First national Band, which released several hit singles that charted high on the Billboard Top 40 and is credited with being the pioneer of the country rock music scene. He performed with The Monkees, as well as writing many of their songs, which went on to be hits. In 1989, alongwith The Monkees, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1995, the group reunited for an album, which was released in 1996, and went on a tour of the UK with the group in 1997. His second band was The Second National Band with which he released a number of popular songs.
The pioneer of country music and the music video genre, he went on to produce music videos for Lionel Richie’s All Night Long and Michael Jackson’s The Way You Make Me Feel. He created PopClips for Nickelodeon, which would later air on MTV after being bought by Time Warner. He hosted a show on NBC that would propel to fame the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Whoopi Goldberg, Arsenio Hall and Garry Shandling.
