MercyMe: Early Years

An American contemporary Christian music band, MercyMe was formed in 1994. The band consists of guitarists Barry Graul and Michael Scheuchzer, bassist Nathan Cochran, percussionist Robby Shaffer, keyboardist James Bryson and vocalist Bart Millard. The band’s music can be divided into pre-2001 and post-2001 era. The former represents the time when MercyMe released six studio albums independently and the latter represents a time when MercyMe signed up to a major record label, INO Records. MercyMe gained mainstream fame after 2001.

MercyMe: 1994 – 2001

From 1995 to 2000, MercyMe released 6 albums namely Pleased to Meet You, Traces of Rain, Traces of Rain, Volume II, The Need, The Worship Project and Look. Out of these efforts, The Worship Project did extremely well both critically and commercially.

The Worship Project, despite being independently released, sold over 60,000 copies within a year. Furthermore, it got raving reviews in Cross Rhythms, a UK based Christian music magazine. This album was different from its predecessors in a lot of ways. For starters, it wasn’t influenced by grunge music, but was essentially a rock and pop album. It also incorporated elements like violins and organs. “I Can Only Imagine” first appeared on this album.

MercyMe: 2001 – 2017

The band signed up with INO Records in 2001 and hit it big with the Christian music fans. Ever since then, the band has also released albums under Epic Records and Columbia Records. Almost There was MercyMe’s first album released under a record label. Released in 2001, the album was certified double Platinum in the US by the RIAA. It also debuted at No.1 position on the US Christian Albums chart. An 11 track album, Almost There was described by Crosswalk as "In the ever–growing genre of modern worship, MercyMe steps up to the plate and drives a home run over the fence".

MercyMe’s 5 studio albums after Almost There were all certified Gold in the US. These albums were Spoken For, Undone, Coming Up to Breathe, All That Is Within Me and The Generous Mr. Lovewell. The Hurt & The Healer was the band’s sixth album after The Generous Mr. Lovewell. While it failed to get certified, it did debut at No.1 position on the US Christian Albums chart. Next followed Welcome to the New, which not only debuted at No.1 position on the US Christian Albums chart, but was also, certified Gold. Lifer will be MercyMe’s upcoming album. The band has also raised money for kids with diabetes. In 2009, MercyMe in partnership with Imagine A Cure and Compassion International, headlined a tour, which performed at various venues in the US.

One of the band’s songs "I Would Die For You" was used to raise money for a child in Peru, who had contracted bubonic plague.
