His next album came out after the suicide of his wife, in 1966, called The Pretender. It was a dark album, and the track "The Pretender" is an account of losing in the face of Reality.

The album called "Running on Empty" gave Browne a true taste of commercial success. It included tracks like, "Running on empty", "The Road", "The load-out stay", and "Rosie". This album was recorded in a more conventional style, combining concert performances and recordings made in buses, hotel rooms, and back stage. The album was released in 1977 and is known to be Browne's biggest commercial success ever. Numerous other albums he released after "Running on Empty" succeeded as well.
